The Heritage Revival

Concept

The goal was to preserve the industrial character of the original warehouse while infusing it with new life. The design exposes and celebrates the building's historic brickwork, steel trusses, and large window openings, while inserting modern elements to support its new functions as art galleries, studios, and cafes.

Challenges

Integrating modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems without compromising the building's historic fabric was a major challenge. We also needed to meet contemporary accessibility and safety standards while respecting the original structure.

Solution

A "building within a building" approach was used for some of the new spaces, creating freestanding pods that leave the original structure untouched. Exposed conduit and ductwork were carefully routed to become part of the industrial aesthetic. A new central staircase and elevator were introduced as a distinct, modern sculptural element.
